This job took us to a family home in Grasscroft, Oldham, where the living room carpet had picked up a few different problems at once. The household cat had urinated on the carpet in more than one spot, leaving a smell that lingered in the room, and there were darker traffic lanes worn into the pile around the sofa from everyday use.

On top of that, the customer’s child had accidentally dropped ink onto the carpet in several spots. They had already tried a few DIY cleaning methods, but the ink marks stayed put and some of the shop-bought products had left a sticky residue behind in the fibres. It needed a proper professional clean rather than another go with a bottle from under the sink.

The Carpet Problems

When we arrived and inspected the living room carpet, there was a fair bit going on:

Ink is one of the trickiest things to get out of a carpet. Rubbing at it or reaching for the wrong product usually makes it worse, spreading the mark outwards or pushing the pigment deeper into the base of the fibres. The same goes for felt tip pen marks on a child’s bedroom carpet, which need exactly the same patient approach. Cat urine causes a different problem. If it is only masked with an air freshener or a general cleaner, the source stays in the carpet and the smell keeps coming back, especially in warm or humid weather. Both needed treating properly at the source. If your living room carpet is at that stage, get a free written quote and we will be straight with you about what we think we can shift.

The Results

The difference was easy to see once the carpet had dried:

The living room went from a carpet the customer was a bit embarrassed by to one that looked clean, even and fresh again. The dark spots that had been bothering them were gone, the pile felt fuller underfoot, the pet smell was sorted, and the room was ready to be used properly the same day once it had dried off.

How We Cleaned the Carpet

We worked through the job in stages, treating each problem with the right product rather than trying to fix everything in one go:

The ink was the part that needed the most patience. If you rub an ink stain or use the wrong product on it, you can easily spread the mark across a wider area or drive it further into the pile, which makes it far harder to remove later. Slow, repeated blotting with the right treatment is what gives you the best chance of lifting it, and it is why we never rush this part.

The Final Result

A living room carpet that had ink spots, a cat urine smell, worn traffic lanes and flattened pile all at the same time was left clean, even and fresh. The ink lifted out of the fibres, the darker paths around the sofa came up noticeably, the crushed areas by the sofa and the door stood back up, and the odour treatment sorted the smell at the source rather than hiding it.

The customer was really pleased to have the room back to normal, with nothing standing out on the carpet and no smell to apologise for when guests came round. It is a good example of what professional carpet cleaning can do on a carpet that has already had a few failed DIY attempts thrown at it.
